چکیده

Many data-intensive applications require high-performance data management facilities, but utilize only a small fraction of the power of a general-purpose database system (DBMS). We believe single schema database systems (SSDs), i.e., special-purpose DBMSs that are designed for a single schema and a predeclared set of database operations, are a vital need of today’s software industry. The challenge is to create a technology for economically building high-performance SSDs. SSD research will combine results from object-oriented databases, persistent object stores, module interconnection languages, rule-based optimizers, open-architecture systems, extensible databases, and generic data types.

issues in database schema evolution : the road not taken Working Paper # 2003 - 15

Dynamic schema evolution is the ability of the database schema to evolve by incorporating changes to its structure without loss of existing data and without significantly affecting the dayto-day operations of the database. A very large body of literature exists today reflecting the extensive work addressing schema evolution and its management. Schema evolution has three well-defined and inter-r...

Schema Versions in Object-Oriented Database Systems

Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS) are especially suited to model complex and highly dynamic application domains. In this paper, we propose a schema uersioning approach which supports the dynamic change of an objectoriented database schema while it is used by running applications. OUT mechanism allows to have applications working with diflerent schema weTsions on top of the sa...

A Simple Model of Negotiation for Cooperative Updates on Database Schema Components

Modern applications involving information systems often require the cooperation of several distinct users, and many models of such cooperation have arisen over the years. One way to model such situations is via a cooperative update on a database; that is, an update for which no single user has the necessary access rights, so that several users, each with distinct rights, must cooperate to achie...

1999A Meta-Data Management System for Data Warehouse

A data warehouse is simply a single, complete, and consistent store of data obtain from a variety of sources and made available to end users in a way they can understand and use in a business context. To manage and maintain the heterogeneous data source and huge amount data of a data warehouse, much research has been done in the topic called Meta-Data management system. Current research for Met...

A Benchmark for Online Non-blocking Schema Transformations

This paper presents a benchmark for measuring the blocking behavior of schema transformations in relational database systems. As a basis for our benchmark, we have developed criteria for the functionality and performance of schema transformation mechanisms based on the characteristics of state of the art approaches. To address limitations of existing approaches, we assert that schema transforma...
